In this episode of Don Talk, Donovan Adkisson takes a look at the 2026 midterm elections, the sweeping Democratic victories across the country, and what those results could mean for the next two years of American politics. With Democrats taking control of both the House and Senate, Donovan discusses some of the surprising election outcomes, including historic developments in Georgia, closely contested Senate races in Alaska and Mississippi, and the growing political backlash against Donald Trump and his administration.
But winning elections is only half the battle. Donovan argues that Democrats cannot afford to squander this opportunity by focusing exclusively on investigations, impeachment, and political revenge. While congressional oversight and accountability are important, he believes the American people sent a much bigger message at the ballot box: they want relief from the rising cost of living.
The conversation turns to the affordability crisis, from skyrocketing grocery bills and gasoline prices to the economic consequences of the ongoing conflict with Iran. Donovan also discusses Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's decision to suspend the state's gasoline tax and explains why he's willing to give credit to politicians from either party when he believes they've done something right.
Immigration reform is another major topic. Donovan explains why he believes America's strength comes from its diversity and immigrant heritage, and why making legal immigration more accessible could help address illegal immigration. He even draws an interesting comparison to the streaming entertainment industry, where increasingly expensive and complicated services can drive consumers toward alternatives.
Closer to home, Donovan examines Georgia's surprising election results, including Jon Ossoff's victory and the election of Democratic leadership to several statewide offices. He also touches on the political implications of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's decision to remain on the bench and the challenges facing both political parties moving forward.
Throughout the episode, Donovan returns to one central argument: the 2026 midterms weren't necessarily an endorsement of the Democratic Party. They were a rejection of Donald Trump and the direction of the country. Democrats now have an opportunity to demonstrate that they can govern effectively, but they need to focus on the issues affecting everyday Americans rather than wasting their political capital.
It's politics, personal observations, a little frustration, and plenty of opinions in this episode of Don Talk.
