Welcome to episode 90 of The Book of Donovan! Today marks 1,244 days of alcohol retirement, and while I didn't have much of an agenda going into this episode, I managed to find plenty to talk about. Mostly my eyes, the joys of getting older, and the realization that being able to see clearly apparently comes with a rather hefty price tag.
After putting off an eye exam for longer than I probably should have, I finally bit the bullet. I take a trip down memory lane, recalling my childhood struggles with glasses, the absolute nightmare of learning to wear contact lenses, and the freedom I experienced after having LASIK surgery back in 2005. For more than two decades, I enjoyed pretty decent vision, but Father Time eventually decided to remind me that I'm not getting any younger.
I also talk about my wife's cataract surgery in 2023, the eye-watering $11,000 price tag that came with it, and my concerns that I might be heading down that same road. Fortunately, my eye exam revealed no cataracts or serious problems, just the need for corrective lenses again.
That brings me to my first experience with Warby Parker, where those advertised $95 glasses somehow turned into a $520 purchase. I explain why I decided to try precision progressive lenses, how spectacularly they failed to work with my computer monitors, and why I've already sent them back in exchange for something simpler. To their credit, Warby Parker's customer service has been excellent so far, even if their turnaround time leaves something to be desired.
Finally, I get into a little behind-the-scenes podcasting geekery. I'm experimenting with Audacity 4.0 as a possible replacement for Adobe Audition, which I've used for more than a decade. I've also been trying to learn Logic Pro, but that relationship isn't going particularly well. Between new audio plugins, AI-assisted workflows, and a custom audio-leveling project, I'm hoping to maintain the sound quality of the show without continuing to hand Adobe another twenty-something dollars every month.
It's a little bit of aging, a little bit of technology, a little bit of complaining, and a whole lot of me being me.
Thanks for spending a little of your day with me. Take care of yourself, check in on an old friend, hug the people you love, and I'll see you in the next episode.
